The Comprehensive Literature Review (1 hour)

The comprehensive literature review is an essential component of graduate study to become familiar with the published results of research in a discipline and to include in theses and dissertations.

With the explosion of information available online and the temptation to use general purpose web search engines, many sources are either inappropriate or incomplete. The library’s Comprehensive Literature Review workshop addresses these challenges by:

• helping to identify the most appropriate tools for searching the scholarly literature in a specific discipline
• training advanced search techniques for locating obscure materials
• describing the scope of library collections, and services for obtaining materials not owned by Tulane
• encouraging consultations with a subject liaison librarian for continuing research support.

Group Study Rooms with Presentation Screens

There are two group study rooms, located in the first floor stacks past the PJ's coffee stand. In addition to power outlets, these rooms contain large 42" presentation screens to work with laptops. These rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for groups of two or more people.

Additionally, there are large tables located in the 3rd floor reading area that can be used for quiet group study. The Learning Commons, located on the first floor of the library, contains several large tables that can also be used for group study.

Mac users should bring their own adapter cable to connect to the the presentation screens.

SearchAll - the library's new discovery tool

Howard-Tilton Memorial Library introduces a new search feature that allows users to search many of the library’s resources simultaneously in a single search box. SearchAll provides a direct means of discovery for millions of books, journal articles, sound recordings, video recordings, archival finding aids, images, and much more. It takes the form of a simple search box prominently placed on the library home page alongside traditional search options such as the library’s online Catalog, Articles, and Databases (see http://library.tulane.edu/).

For more information, please see the library website. Over the course of the fall semester, the library will be offering formal training sessions for faculty as well as walk-in sessions. The formalized sessions will review the basic and more advanced features of SearchAll while the walk-in sessions will be tailored to address specific questions and information needs. Every August 29th since the Hurricane Katrina disaster, we memorialize those who died because of the storm and the flood in 2005. At the same time, we now celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of the citizens of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, over these last six years. Our library holds a large array of materials devoted to Katrina and its aftermath; in fact, Tulane University and the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library are part of the story.

Two colorful and fascinating books, which focus on New Orleans after the storm, are located in the Louisiana Research Collection, with another copy each in the Howard-Tilton stacks:

This is a photographic documentary volume with an emphasis on the suffering and destruction of the storm, followed by the spirited resilience of Katrina victims who were determined to come home to rebuild their lives in the years after the diaspora. The subject is primarily but not exclusively New Orleans. Particular sensitivity is given to the portrayals of young children. Anderson Cooper states in his introduction, "New Orleans ... is a city of memory, but not a museum. It is alive, and dynamic, full of life and joy, and success."

Drew Brees presents this memoir about his own life, faith and family, and the story of Katrina, especially in relation to the New Orleans Saints. To illustrate the the physical and emotional extremes, the conversational narrative is enhanced by a selection of photographs of the Superdome and flooded city during Katrina, contrasting with the Saints’ victory in Super Bowl XLIV, and the joy of riding through New Orleans in one of the Saints Super Bowl parades. The Howard-Tilton Memorial Library web site has a research guide on Katrina resources, providing wide-ranging support for learning about the hurricane, the flood and the recovery efforts.

Reading Project Film Series Kicks Off!

Join us for the first of four scheduled film screenings of the Reading Project Film Series. The first film, Cancer Cell Research: The Way of All Flesh, is the BBC documentary that figures prominently in this year's Reading Project book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. This 60 minute documentary examines how samples of Lacks' cancerous cells, taken by a scientist nearly five decades ago, have proven vital to cancer research worldwide, and why they have cause controversy among scientists in the research community.

RefWorks is a Web-based citation management software available to Tulane students, faculty and staff. This tool allows you to save, format and include citations within your writing, using a word processing program like Microsoft Word. It functions in a similar way to EndNote, except that it is not necessary to buy a special license to use it and you can access your account from any computer with Internet access. The Reading Project Film Series presents a screening of Targeting Tumor Cells: New Strategies in Targeting Cancer, in conjunction with the Tulane Reading Project.
The first test of its kind, the Pap smear was designed to test cells before they become cancerous. Doctors are using similar methods to search for cancer in other parts of the body, especially when hereditary issues are a factor. In this program, medical experts explore emerging procedures for cancer screening and prevention, and explain how constant advancements in medicine are expanding the ways that cancer is prevented and treated. Specific methods and tools discussed include endoscopes, new drugs, lasers, and even robots. (26 minutes)
Film Series screenings enhance the Tulane Reading Project experience, giving students an opportunity to expand their knowledge about issues raised by this year’s Reading Project book and discussion group sessions.

TITLE: Research Help Desk Student Assistant

JOB DUTIES:

Research Help Desk Student Assistants provide general library information and research assistance to students, faculty and visitors at the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library. Assistance is provided in-person, by phone, chat, and email. The Student Assistant works closely with Circulation Department staff and Technology Help staff to provide services to library users in the Learning Commons. Students must be able to work with minimal supervision. Other duties as assigned.

Work-Study award required. Pay starts at $7.25/hour for a minimum of 8 hours per week for evening and weekend shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: Excellent customer service skills; knowledge of research techniques; and a willingness to be trained extensively in the library’s online databases; excellent communication skills; attention to detail; ability to handle confidential matters.

Preferred: Upper classmen and/or graduate students; experience working in a library.

New self-service scanner in the Special Collections Reading Room

The library has purchased a “Bookeye4 Color V-Cradle Planetary Scanner” for researchers’ use in the Special Collections Reading Room (second floor of Jones Hall). This is an overhead digital camera, with the option of a large cradled or flat surface below, and has many important advantages over photocopiers. It’s convenient for capturing color images for later consultation in personal research; this process of photographing fragile books, ephemera, and archival items is better in terms of their preservation; and also, it’s more environmentally friendly, because it does not require paper or toner. We’re happy to help researchers get started, but the self-service scanner is quite simple to use, and has been very well-received with those who have already made scans of the many types of Special Collections holdings which are accessible through our reading room in Jones Hall, Room 202.

Scanned images may be saved to a USB flash drive, or e-mailed directly from the scanner. We recommend that researchers who intend to use this scanner come prepared with their own flash drive, as e-mailing works best for small files. Please see the staff person on duty for more details regarding the use of the new scanner.

Summer Shuttle Schedules

The Summer Shuttle Schedule begins this Saturday, May 14^th and will operate until Monday, August 1^st. A complete list of schedules can be found at www.shuttles.tulane.edu

A few changes to point out on the summer schedules:

Green Line- Will operate using one bus during the day and one bus at night. The Green Line will end at 7:30 PM. Freret@ Poydras will replace the LaSalle@ Poydras stop.

Pappi- Will end at 7:30 PM. Pappi riders will take the new Red Line after 7:30 PM. Freret@ Poydras will replace the LaSalle@ Poydras stop.

Red Line- New route! Will begin at 7:30 PM and pick up where the Green and Pappi Lines end AND will also include trips to Wal-Mart. The Red Line will operate seven days a week.

Gold Line- Will begin an hour earlier and end an hour earlier. 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM Monday – Friday (No weekend service)

We are also introducing the Flashcard View for ARTstor Mobile, which allows users to test their knowledge by viewing the image without textual information, and then flipping the image to reveal the image record. This new view can be found under the “Views” menu as “Flashcard.” ARTstor Mobile is only available through the Safari browser, just go to library.artstor.org from your mobile device.

The year 2010 has so far delivered to Louisiana a range of events from the Saints Superbowl win to the ongoing BP oil catastrophe, and appropriately, through everything, we are marking the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Every August 29th since the disaster we memorialize those who died in the disaster and its aftermath, as well as celebrate the resilience and the accomplishments of the citizens of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. A few informational links about the subject are included below.

While all of our media collection is searchable in the catalog, it is still sometimes difficult to find what you're looking for. To make it a little easier to locate films about important issues we now have a research guide featuring filmographies (or lists of films) of DVD titles in our collection. Subjects currently available in the Filmographies Research Guide are Oil/Petroleum Industry and Human Rights. More subjects will be added soon so stay tuned!

Mistick Krewe of Comus 1910 float designs digital collection

Another new digital collection of images derived from artwork in the LaRC Carnival Collection has been published in the LOUISiana Digital Library. This one is the complete set of ornate, colorful float designs for the 1910 Comus parade. These drawings were done by Jennie Wilde (1865-1913), an artist who designed floats for many New Orleans Mardi Gras parades. These images are believed to be tracings she made from her earlier original designs, possibly given as a presentation copy to Comus captain, S. P. Walmsley. The parade had an Islamic theme, and certainly at least the float designs were created with an imaginative and respectful tone.

This is one in a series of subcollections, within the large physical Carnival Collection, which are being created for inclusion in the LDL. Earlier in 2010, the 1873 Comus parade costume designs by Charles Briton appeared. In 1873, not only were there no floats in that year’s less-than-respectful Comus parade, the city police refused break up the crowd at Canal Street, making the famous parade very brief.

The New York Times ran an article several months ago about textbooks for rent. Companies such as BookRenter.com and Chegg.com offer textbook rental with free return shipping much like Netflix and dvds.

The Tulane University libraries do not purchase many of the textbooks used in classes since textbooks are often updated every year, especially in the sciences.

Lippman collection of Civil War postal covers now online

In 2009, the Louisiana Research Collection acquired a collection of Civil War period letters and postal covers from donor Al Lippman. The forty postal covers, with one exception, depict Union sentiment and patriotism. Many depict Confederate figures such as Jefferson Davis and General Beauregard. Sometimes these depictions are animal-like caricatures, others tend towards violent depictions, including several showing a hanging Jefferson Davis. Some postal covers portray a disdain of Britain's relationship with the Confederacy, others are steeped in Union patriotism and imagery of Uncle Sam.

We have digitized the postal cover collection, and are pleased to announce its debut on the LOUIS Digital Library site. You can access the entire collection here.

Irish Channel architectural survey, 1974-1976

Manuscripts Collection 505 is a survey of the New Orleans neighborhood known as the Irish Channel, a part of town which is bounded by Philip, Delachaise and Constance Streets, and the Mississippi River. For each of the approximately 3,600 housing units standing in the mid-seventies, there is a 5 x 8 inch printed form with handwritten notes regarding: street, number, original use, present use, style/type, materials, architectural/historical rating, physical condition, number and kind of trees, general comments and negative factors. Each structure is featured in a black and white contact print, many of which include parked cars. Included also are handwritten and photocopied typed sheets, journals of projects, flyers, and photographic negatives, summary statistics for the area, Trinity Episcopal Church survey, and class notes of some of the students who produced the survey as part of an Architecture Seminar in Historic Preservation given by Dr. Bernard Lemann at Tulane University, fall 1975.

Digital collection of Comus costume drawings now available

Tulane University’s Louisiana Research Collection (LaRC) is pleased to announce its first digital collection available through the LOUIS Digital Library. LOUIS, the Louisiana Library Network, hosts the LOUIS Digital Library, which contains thousands of images of documents, publications, artifacts, art and other materials from libraries, museums, and archives around Louisiana. Our first collection is the 1873 Mistick Krewe of Comus costume drawings. This parade is particularly famous in Mardi Gras history, as it was one of the first major parades steeped in political satire and ridicule. The "Missing Links" referred to the work of Charles Darwin, and the parade not only sent up the theory of evolution, but other topics of the day including Reconstruction.

Tulane's Louisiana Research Collection has a complete set of the Missing Links costume designs. This particular set of designs is part of a much larger Carnival collection. We are planning other online digital collections of Carnival material from other krewes.

William Craft Brumfield papers

Author, photographer, and Tulane professor William Brumfield’s papers are in the process of being assembled as our Manuscripts Collection 709. The collection got its start with the typescript and galleys, with color and black and white printed photographs, created in preparation for the 1983 publication of Gold in Azure : One Thousand Years of Russian Architecture. Several other items from that era are in the processed collection in our stacks. Over the last few months, Professor Brumfield has begun to contribute more material to the collection, such as the complete set of Kennan Institute annual reports since 1989, as that publication has liberally published his photographs almost exclusively in every issue.

Carol J. Schlueter’s recent article in the New Wave provides a quick insight into the current scholarly and creative interests, activities and publications of William Brumfield. Online exhibits of his photographs are openly accessible in various internet sites: Meeting of Frontiers: The William C. Brumfield Collection is hosted by the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress; The William C. Brumfield Russian Architecture Collection is a collaboration with the University of Washington Libraries; there is a photographic gallery of his contributions on the World Digital Library, a joint project of the Library of Congress and UNESCO; and the Culture in the Vologda Region web site hosts an online gallery and interview with Professor Brumfield which appeared on Russian television and radio.

Archival collections of personal and professional papers are usually the by-product of a person’s life. Often, these valuable items have been held together by relatives or other collectors, and then donated to, or purchased by, a library or other repository. But those scholars, public figures, writers and artists who intentionally gather their own papers for the benefit of future researchers, and donate them for safe-keeping to a specific repository, are a real boon to the preservation of our cultural heritage. At Tulane’s Special Collections, we greatly appreciate the generosity, enthusiasm and foresight of our self-archiving donors, including such notable individuals as Lindy Boggs, Art Silverman, Mignon Faget, Phyllis Hudson, LaVerne “Pike” Thomas, Catharine Brosman, Joel Fletcher, Bert Myers, Joel Grossman Myers, Joel Fletcher and William Brumfield.

300th birthday of Dr. Samuel Johnson exhibit in Jones Hall and Howard-Tilton

The Tulane Special Collections library is pleased to announce a new exhibition in honor of the 300th birthday of Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), a giant of English literature and criticism. The exhibit consists of rare first editions of Johnson’s works: for instance, his Dictionary of the English Language (the first for English), Prayers and Meditations, and his variorum edition of Shakespeare’s works. The exhibit also contains a rare first edition of Boswell’s famous Life of Johnson and first editions of other notable eighteenth-century writers, such as Jonathan Swift (Gulliver’s Travels) and Laurence Sterne (Tristram Shandy). These materials are further illuminated by pages from an early print dictionary in Latin, Plutarch’s Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans, and medieval manuscript prayerbooks. All items are drawn from Special Collections, Tulane University. The exhibit is co-curated by Professors Dwight Codr and Michael P. Kuczynski, with the assistance of Samantha Bruner, an MA student in the Tulane English Department, pursuing a certificate program in Archival and Digital Humanities. Labeling provides not only bibliographic information about the books, but information about their relationship to English literary and religious culture.

The exhibit can be viewed on the second floor of Jones Hall (6801 Freret Street, New Orleans, 70118) Monday through Friday 9-5, and on Saturdays from 9-1. The exhibit will be open through March 15, 2010.

CHAIRS: 125 Years of Design

Tulane University’s Southeastern Architectural Archive (SEAA) has launched a new exhibition.

CHAIRS: 125 Years of Design illustrates the profound aesthetic, cultural, societal and technological changes that have impacted modern chair design. Highlights include seating furniture by A.W.N. Pugin (1812-1852), Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969), James Lamantia (1923-), and Curtis & Davis (active 1947-1978).

It has been said that few objects embody modern design as eloquently as the chair. The SEAA exhibition provides an expansive array of chairs and other seating forms dating from 1835 to 1960, from British architect/designer A.W.N. Pugin’s delicate etchings of Gothic-inspired seating to the New Orleans Curtis & Davis firm’s high modern sacristy furniture.

Architects first began designing furniture for their buildings in the seventeenth century. The Scottish-born architect Robert Adam (1728-1792) expanded his practice to devise furnishings and other household objects befitting his interiors. Similarly, American architect Samuel McIntire (1757-1811) designed neoclassical residences along with the case furniture and chairs to match.

Massachusetts furniture makers such as John Ainsworth Dunn and the Heywood Brothers shifted production from artisanship to factory assembly. The New Orleans World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition (1884-1885) revealed a growing assortment of manufactured American and European furniture: Charles Fitch Company’s rosewood and mahogany bureaus & tables, Heywood Brothers’ rattan & reed chairs, Friedrich Wenzel’s Texas Longhorn chairs, and Thonet’s Austrian bentwood seating. New Orleans architect Thomas Sully (1855-1939) decorated both home and office with such accoutrements.

There were also those who resisted the industrialization of household fitments. Arts and Crafts Movement architects such as A.W.N. Pugin (1812-1852) and Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886) championed the harmonious inclusion of handmade furniture into their structures. Harry L. Moses (c. 1877-c. 1935), a New Orleans designer, advertised himself locally as both an interior decorator and maker of fancy carved chairs. In the early twentieth century, Charles Milo Williams (1867-1954) created whimsical sketches of furniture adorned with intricate Moorish architectural embellishments.

The reconciliation of mechanization and fine craftsmanship occurred in the late 1920s. Architects associated with the Bauhaus created some of the twentieth century’s most significant chair designs. Such furniture impacted New Orleans architects in the years following World War II, as renowned architect-designers Charles Eames (1907-1978) and Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) garnered public acclaim, and as Knoll International expanded the American market for high quality “designer” furniture. Mark Lowery, Lemuel McCoy and James Lamantia’s entries for the Chicago Tribune’s 6^th Annual Better Rooms Competition (1952) attest to these changing sensibilities.

Welcome to Tulane University Libraries' newest service. Article and Database Finder was implemented because of the rapid growth in the number of electronic resources now available. The library subscribes to more than 500 databases in dozens of disciplines, as well as over 30,000 e-journals. This makes it challenging for students and scholars to locate the right tools for their literature searches. A consequence of this difficulty is that the library is now receiving more and more complaints from faculty members who are unhappy that students are citing non-scholarly materials that they have found in places such as Google and Wikipedia.

Article and Database Finder helps overcome these challenges in the following ways:

Locate the best databases in your field by searching or browsing by subject category or title.

Use librarian-created Quick Sets to search up to 10 scholarly databases at once from an easy-to-use search interface.

Log in with your Tulane ID and create custom database sets. These sets are saved permanently for you to use in future research. This is a great feature if you commonly use the same databases all the time.

This tool allows you to save, format and include citations within your writing, using a word processing program like Microsoft Word. It functions in a similar way to EndNote, except that it is not necessary to buy a special license to use it and you can access your account from any computer with Internet access. Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG) : a digital library of Greek literature
The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae® (TLG®) is a research center at the University of California, Irvine. Founded in 1972 the TLG® has created a digital library which contains most literary texts written in Greek from Homer (8 BC) to the fall of Byzantium in AD 1453. Its goal is to create a comprehensive digital library of Greek literature from antiquity to the present era.

Black Abolitionist Papers
This extraordinary, primary source collection is the first to comprehensively detail the extensive work of African Americans to abolish slavery in the United States prior to the Civil War. Covering the period1830-1865 , the collection presents the massive, international impact of African American activism against slavery, in the writings and publications of the activists themselves. The approximately 15,000 articles, documents, correspondence, proceedings, manuscripts, and literary works of almost 300 Black abolitionists show the full range of their activities in the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Germany. This collection, when first published in microfilm, literally transformed scholarly understanding of Black activism during this period. Now it is available in a searchable, easily accessible format for research, teaching, and study.

EMBASE
EMBASE.com is a biomedical and pharmacological bibliographic database, which provides access to the most up-to-date citations and abstracts from biomedical and drug literature via EMBASE and Medline. It contains over 19 million indexed records from 7,000+ peer reviewed journals, covering 1947 to date, with more than 600,000 additions annually.

New Open Access titles in E-Journals:
Exilpresse (40 Titles) The Exilpresse digital collection includes German language periodicals and magazines published by those considered to be in exile between 1933-1945. Publishers were both immigrants to other countries and Jews within Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia after 1933. The collection is a project of the German National Library, Frankfurt am Main.

MetaLib now live in beta testing for searching multiple databases

MetaLib, a suite of tools for searching across multiple databases, as well as for database discovery, is now live in beta testing. It is linked from the front page of the Howard-Tilton website as “NEW Database & Article Finder.” It is located at http://metalib.tulane.edu . Please go ahead and try it out. If you have any observations or questions, feel free to contact Paul St-Pierre at pstpierr@tulane.edu.

Over the course of the summer, we will be gathering feedback from users, making modifications to enhance usability and aesthetics, integrating it with the library’s web sites, and creating instructional materials. We hope that this will become a valuable new tool to enhance our students' and faculty's ability to locate research materials.

Selected Manuscripts Finding Aids now online

We are excited to announce that a selected group of our Manuscripts finding aids are now online. The finding aids are currently in a PDF format, and users will need a PDF reader to download and use them. Patrons can also search for keywords in most of the finding aids.

This is just a small sample of the more than 1,000 manuscripts collections we hold, and we are planning to add more. If you wish to see a finding aid that isn't on the page, please contact us, and we will be happy to make it available if resources allow.

Many of our noted collections now have their finding aids available online for the first time, including the papers of John Kennedy Toole, Rudolph Matas, Charles Colcock Jones, and Natalie Scott. We also have organizational records from the Christian Women's Exchange, First German Lutheran Church, Council of Social Agencies, and the Orleans Parish Medical Society.

Longue Vue and the Sterns (from Special Collections)

Longue Vue House and Gardens, a local National Historic Landmark, was originally the home of Edgar and Edith Stern, prominent philanthropists during the twentieth century. Although damaged by Hurricane Katrina, the grounds and building have been restored and the estate continues to serve as an educational and cultural resource for the community and visitors.

As part of an NHPRC grant for archival processing, Lisa Lewis, archivist at Longue Vue, was required to submit a MARC record to OCLC representing their historical collection. As they are not members, she requested a partnership with Tulane’s Special Collections for this purpose. We collaborated with her to create and contribute the record to the WorldCat database, entitled Longue Vue House and Gardens historic collection.

Within Tulane’s manuscript holdings, we have related material in the Edgar B. Stern collection (Manuscripts Collection 235), which includes further Stern family documents, as well business records of Lehman, Stern, and Co. and subsidiary cotton merchants in New Orleans, dating back to the nineteenth century. This collection includes a range of massive handwritten ledger books, up to 59 cm.

For more recent information and artifacts about Longue Vue, there are several folders in the Louisiana CollectionVertical File with brochures through 2009, invitations, mailed promotional material, calendars, newsletters, auction programs and other printed ephemeral material. This resource is built through cumulative contributions from our friends in the community. The 2007 post card featured as an illustration was donated to the Louisiana Collection for the vertical file by art scholar and author, Jessie Poesch.

Film Indexes Online brings Film Index International, FIAF International Index to Film Periodicals and AFI Catalog together in one site. The result of distinguished partnerships with the British Film Institute (BFI), the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and the American Film Institute (AFI), these three databases are cornerstone resources for research in film. Searched together, they offer an unparalleled level of detail, and as companion sites they provide the most comprehensive and trustworthy coverage of films available.

Courier Service between HTML and Matas now available

We are pleased to announce that courier service between Howard-Tilton Memorial Library (Uptown) and Matas Library of the Health Sciences (Downtown) is now available.

This service for the exchange of circulating stacks items between the two libraries is available through the Interlibrary Loan office. Put a note in the “customer notes” section that the item is at Matas and wanted for delivery to Howard-Tilton or that the item is at Howard-Tilton and wanted for delivery to Matas.

Items requested before 10 am M-F, will be available for pickup at the circulation desk after 5 pm that same day.

Limited services at New Orleans Public Library this week

Due to a utlities upgrade, the Main Library will be closed Saturday, April 18 through Saturday, April 25.

In addition, all Branch libraries will be closed Sunday, April 19 - Monday, April 20 and Saturday, April 25 - Sunday, April 26.

The branch libraries will be open Tuesday, April 21 through Friday, April 24, 10am - 6 pm, for limited services only.

Internet access will not be available at these locations during this time.

To reach a branch by phone during open hours, please call 504 942-0834.

The NOPL website will be available remotely, but the online catalog and NOPL system email will be down from April 18-26.

Normal service will resume on April 27.

In celebration of Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday (February 12, 1809) and 150 years since the publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, the library has created a book display containing a sampling of materials pertaining to Darwin and evolutionary theory. It includes authors who influenced Darwin, Darwin’s prolific list of publications, biographical texts, and books by writers who have been influenced by Darwinian ideas.

The display is in the main lobby of Howard-Tilton Memorial Library until the of February.

Construction Noise: Feb. 9-10

There may be a considerable amount of construction noise eminating from the Freret Street side of the first floor of the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library building mostly on Monday, February 9, and Tuesday, February 10. This will be caused by a work crew coring holes in the floor for new electrical wiring that will serve a broad variety of new technology-equipped learning spaces. We know that for library users the temporary noise will be well worth the result, but nonetheless we apologize for the inconvience.

In the meantime, users will find quieter study spaces on the upper floors of the library.

Renovations Underway on First Floor of Library

Construction has begun on a renovation of a portion of the library's first floor. This renovation will include new floor, new furniture and new computers. The new computers will be Macs that can be booted to either the Mac or PC platform. Furniture will allow students more comfortable work space and enable them to work in groups of various sizes. We hope to have the work on this area completed by Spring Break. There may be some noise and disruption related to the construction.

To prepare for the renovation, computers formerly located in the first floor Reference area have been permanently relocated throughout the building. The same number of computers will be available for students during the renovation, and the end result will be an increase in the number of computers in the building.

Computers have been relocated to the following areas:

• 1st floor stacks: go through glass doors to your right as you enter the building (most computers have moved to this location)

• 1st floor seminar room: go through glass doors to your right as you enter the building, go past computers and make a left

• 3rd floor stacks, near M call numbers: go through glass doors into 3rd floor stacks, make a right and another right

• Elevator lobbies on 2nd-3rd floors

• Wireless access is available throughout the building and may be used with personal laptops (registration required) and laptop computers available for checkout at the Circulation Desk (these may not be removed from the building and require a signed user agreement)

• Other computing labs on campus can be found in the Boggs building (1st floor) and adjacent to PJ’s on Willow St.

During the construction phase, the Reference/Information/Technology Desk has been relocated to the other side of the first floor.

Investigating The Reluctant Fundamentalist

The 2008 Tulane Reading Project selection is The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. The New Yorker reviewed the book in its May 28, 2007 issue:

“I am a lover of America,” the young Pakistani narrator of this lucid, unsettling novel begins. In the course of a single day and night, he divulges to a mysterious and possibly menacing American his love affair with this country: embraced first by Princeton, then by a New York firm of business analysts, and finally by the beautiful daughter of a patrician Upper East Side family. Throughout his brilliant trajectory, however, he is troubled by the easy, almost insolent sense of superiority in his American peers, who take for granted their status as sons of empire. Only in the wake of the September 11th attacks, when America’s wrath turns toward his homeland, does he realize that he has become a latter-day janissary—akin to the children of defeated nations who, conscripted in the army of the enemy, “fought to erase their own civilizations.”

EBSCOhost has introduced a redesigned, cleaner, and more interactive interface. This new interface includes hover-over previews, easy access to images, and new limits.

We have over 50 databases that use the EBSCOhost interface, including PsycINFO, Academic Search Complete, and the MLA Bibliography. If you need help using any of our databases, just contact us.

Look up anything online!

Yes, you can look up almost anything in the Wikipedia. But will you always get a correct answer? Where else can you look online for useful, accurate information on any topic?

You may want to try Howard-Tilton's growing collection of online reference books. Full text of many dictionaries, encyclopedias and other sources can be searched via Credo, Oxford Reference Online, and the Virtual Reference Library. These online collections replace the rows of reference books formerly found on the first floor of the library. The Reference Universe database is another useful online tool that will help you locate and connect to articles on your topic.

With all of this available online, the library will no longer maintain a separate collection of reference books. Except for a small collection of non-circulating books which will be kept on the first floor, all reference books will be integrated into the stacks throughout the building. For assistance in locating any reference book formerly in the reference collection, just search the library catalog or ask for assistance at the Information & Reference Desk.

All Welcome at Recovery Center Open House

You're invited....

Tulane Libraries Recovery Center will process a projected 300,000 items owned by Tulane Libraries and damaged during Hurricane Katrina, including music scores, music books, microforms, government documents and archival materials. This multi-year project was started in February 2008, staffed by Library Associates Companies, and will reintegrate the salvaged and restored materials back into the library catalog and collections. Library Associates will also catalog and process thousands of donated materials which will be added to the collections at Tulane University Libraries.

Howard-Tilton Memorial Library and Library Associates Companies invite you to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Tulane Libraries Recovery Center. Join us at the Recovery Center where you can learn more about the salvage and restoration of library materials and take a tour of the facility.

Why doesn't the library have more study areas?

Now that exams are coming up, we are getting many questions from students about the lack of study space in the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library. Some explanation is in order.

As you may know, the library's basement, an area the size of a football field, flooded with 8 feet of water during Hurricane Katrina. Two years later, we are still working with FEMA to renovate and restore the building and the material that was lost. In the meantime, FEMA requires that we place NOTHING additional in the damaged basement. This presents us with a severe space crunch on the upper floors of the library, especially because damaged material that is being restored and replaced must go somewhere within the library when it returns, and it cannot go back into the basement. This has reduced the amount of space available for study on the upper floors.

Two plans are currently underway to help alleviate this situation:

- over the summer, we hope to reorganize our space to create new group and individual study areas in small areas of unused or reconfigurable space around the library

- long-term library building plans will include a major renovation of the Howard-Tilton building, and result in much improved spaces for students

The new display in the lobby of Howard-Tilton celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month.

Thanks to the Hogan Jazz Archive in Jones Hall across from Howard-Tilton for providing several historic artifacts for the display.
